Here are my favorites Go to the market: Annecy has definitely fine-tuned the art of the market. The last Saturday of the month, food is replaced by a fabulous antique market, which carries slightly more sophisticated wares mountain-style furniture but plenty of bric-a-brac. Because of its proximity to Switzerland, prices can be a bit high but you can bargain, and you can also find the occasional excellent deal. Eat a fondue or a tartiflette – I had an exquisite truffle fondue at l’Etage in the old town see that mouthwatering photo below.
In case you’re wondering about the tartiflette, it’s a much-loved local dish made with potatoes, cheese, cream, onions and bacon – to die for! Curiously, this isn’t actually a traditional dish but was invented in the s by producers of the local Reblochon cheese, whose sales were weak. Now, it’s one of the most popular dishes locally and I never go a winter without treating myself to one.
And then buy some at the counter. Go hiking, almost within the city’s limits.

When we first laid eyes on Lake Annecy, on a cold January morning 25 years ago, we thought how lucky people were to live in such an amazingly beautiful place. A few months later we found ourselves living here, and have lived here ever since.
We are delighted to have acquired a sun-filled apartment in a quiet, 17th century, former convent, at the foot of the splendid chateau of the “Ducs de Savoie”. The entrance in the original stone wall of Annecy Old Town was intriguing in itself, with a worn spiral staircase leading up to an old wooden door. Everything needed demolishing and rebuilding: We were also glad to see the back of the ancient plumbing and heating.
We knew we had found something special and hope we have done justice to a truly exceptional location, maintaining its century-old features while adding all that is contemporary and convenient. Right from the start, the plan was to create something sumptuously comfortable for the visitors we hoped would come and experience the unique beauty and abundance of activities of this Venice of the Alps. Having lived here through many seasons, we know there is something special about Annecy all year round, from the bursting out of spring, to the colourful buzz of summer with its water and mountain sports, the splendour of autumn with its glorious walks and cycling round the lake, and the frosty beauty of winter, bringing with it Christmas lights and skiing just 20 minutes away in the Semnoz.
Add to that the numerous weekly markets and many cultural events, which mean there is always something going on.

In the age-old tradition, the wood was carved with fire, burnt to reveal shapes, colours, textures and nuances ad infinitum. Emitting the powerful force of the Earth, a monumental block of blue Savoie stone stands at the entrance to the kitchen universe.
Truth and transparency — the philosophy of Laurent Petit and the spirit of this place. The peaks, the lake, the old chestnut trees, the hosts, the kitchen and dining room brigades unite in an immense peon of praise to nature.

There are very few things that are worth the effort of waking up at 6: But a field trip to the French Alps? Well, I suppose that is worth it. And I might even be able to muster up a little enthusiasm at the prospect of such an early departure. A full 10 hours of sleep each night will not be a deal breaker in order to enjoy these experiences. The dairy farm we visited!
